Animal-Assisted Therapy

If you are looking to improve physical, social, emotional, or cognitive functioning, Animal-Assisted Therapy can be help with boosting motivation and reducing stress(lowering cortisol), and increases social support.

Therapy doesn't have to feel cold or clinical. For many people, having a dog in the room can make it easier to settle in, feel at ease, and begin opening up. In my practice, I work alongside Winnie, a certified therapy dog, who helps create a calm, welcoming environment for clients of all ages. Her presence often brings a sense of comfort and lightness—especially in moments that might otherwise feel overwhelming or hard to put into words.

Animal Assisted Therapy can be especially valuable for children, trauma survivors, individuals experiencing anxiety or depression, and those who may struggle with traditional talk therapy. Animals naturally encourage mindfulness, connection, and authentic interaction, helping clients develop confidence, communication skills, empathy, and emotional awareness. Whether through comfort, play, or simple presence, animals can support deeper therapeutic engagement and create opportunities for healing, resilience, and renewed connection with self and others.

How Can Animal-Assisted Therapy Help

It’s more than just petting a cute dog with a friendly face (though that is a wonderful perk!).

Research shows that the presence of animals can:

  • Reduce Stress: Lowering heart rate and anxiety levels during sessions.

  • Boost Mood: Improving emotional regulation through positive interaction.

  • Build Trust: Creating a bridge of comfort between the client and therapist.

  • Provide Grounding: Offering a tactile, calming presence during difficult conversations.

A Non-Judgmental Partner in Healing

For kids, teens, and adults, having a dog in the room can make opening up feel less scary. Many clients find that sessions feel more approachable and less intimidating with Winnie there. Winnie doesn’t judge or interrupt and always offers a calming energy that helps clients feel more at ease.

This approach can be especially helpful if you're navigating anxiety, trauma, grief, or feeling stuck in patterns that are hard to shift alone. Sometimes healing starts with connection—and animals are experts at helping us feel seen, safe, and supported.
